The masterpieces in this exhibition—more than 130 masks—form an innovative and visually compelling display of artistry and cultures. The exhibition also includes original field photographs, field footage, audio recordings, and a selection musical instruments. Its immersive multimedia design, presenting eleven distinct regional styles of masks, evokes the diversity of ecosystems and cultures. A design goal was to show how different ecological settings influence mask making and performance. The large north gallery is dedicated to the 6 stylistic zones of the savannah. The openness and dusty colors of the savanna permeate the space. The south gallery is dedicated to the 5 stylistic zones located in the rain forest. In this gallery visitors move through spaces that are more constrained and vertical, like the rain forest. (Done in collaboration with Madge Bemiss Architects.)
